Coping with Cooking Catastrophes

We all make mistakes in the kitchen: too much seasoning, too long in the oven. There are a few tricks that can help to remedy the situation.

Pie crust browning too fast -

If the crust of the pie is browning too fast, remove the dish from the oven and cover the area with foil wrap.

Too much salt -

If a soup or stew is too salty, act fast and remove the solid ingredients. Add a peeled potato to the pot and gently simmer the liquid until the potato is soft (not mushy). Remove the potato carefully and return the other ingredients.

Pasta sticking together -

You can avoid the problem altogether by making sure you stir the pasta for the first 2-3 minutes of cooking. This allows the pasta to cook a little on the outside and keeps it from sticking.

Burn the rice? -

Take a crust of bread and place it on top of the rice. If the rice isn't too badly burned, this should absorb most of the burnt aroma.
