Yes, the leaves are beginning to change colour and there's that crisp cool air in the morning signaling one thing, Autumn. Soon grinning pumpkins with be lighting your window sill as the evenings approach faster and winter with its whiteness will be approaching. You can see where I”m going with this, you need to get off of the couch and get ready!

This is the perfect time of year to enjoy Fall's good weather before Winter's slippery weather hampers your mobility getting your home prepared.

Our Fall Cleaning Chore Checklist will help you prepare home and hearth for the coming of winter:

Outside The House

Now that Summer's warmth is ebbing quickly, it's time to get your outside chores done before it's too late.

  • Clean off the patio furniture and summer toys and store them until next Spring.

  • Wire brush in hand, remove flaking paint on trim, railings and decks before getting your brushes out and do the odd touch-up's

  • Seal those windows and doors with caulking...

  • Weather stripping is so handy around household doors and garages... sometimes a simple screw tightening or adjustment helps as well.

  • Wash exterior windows.

  • Hoses with water will crack in freeze in the winter... so empty them and store them away... Make sure outside taps are insulated so you don't have an unexpected freeze and flood!

  • Falls brings lots of leaves so empty out eaves-troughs and downspouts before water freezes up top and causes ice damming.

  • Check your chimneys for blockages, squirrels love them! Get a professional if needed.

The Inside Story:

This is the time to get ready for the holiday season. I know this sounds premature but better now than slugging heavy items through the snow. Cleaning this time of year is so much easier since we still have lots of sunshine to see by. Your air quality will be so much better if you clean now.

  • Clean from top to bottom. Vacuum drapes and window treatments. Clean window sills and window wells. Vacuum baseboards and corners.

  • Vacuum upholstered furniture, or have professionally cleaned if needed. Move furniture and vacuum beneath and behind it.

  • Wash interior windows.

  • Get comforters and other linens out and launder them so that they're ready when you need them.

  • Perfect time to get your favourite carpet cleaner since warm October afternoons will help speed carpet drying. Carpet cleaning companies book up fast towards the end of October so get do it now!

  • Now is also the time get your kitchen ready for holiday cooking. Organize your pantry and get provisions in now! Won't be long you'll need everything at your fingertips... ie baking supplies and other pots and pans.

  • Remove clutter from the kitchen counters since you're going to need room for holiday cooking.

  • Drain sediment from hot water heaters.

  • This time of year, my vacuum is my best friend. Clean under or behind the refrigerator and other appliances. Use your vacuum as well to get dust off of light fixtures.

  • After using your best friend, ie the vacuum, give it a once over and change the bag or clean out its collection area.

  • Air purifiers need cleaning as well this time of year.

  • Same goes for humidifiers... replace elements before the heating season begins.

  • Check washer hoses for bulges, cracks or splits. Replace them every other year as well as check the dryer for blockages in the tube and vent.

  • Inspections for your furnace are best done now as well. Nothing worst than coming home to a frigid home with frozen taps!

  • Check local hardware stores, they will begin to have specials on preparing your home for winter as well. Best to stock up on furnace filters too since clean ones maximize your furnace's efficiency.

As you can see, this a long list of items to accomplish. This is also the time to organize your closets. Keep, donate and toss. That is your mantra when weeding your closets.
